Students in Grade Three receive instruction in Religion, English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies and Handwriting. The following are summaries of the curriculum covered in each of these subject areas.
Religion
Text –We Believe We Are the Church. Sadlier, 2015
The students will learn about the life of Jesus and how He brought the Good News of God to Earth. Students enjoy learning and exploring the parts of the Mass, the liturgical year, the seven sacraments and the four marks of the Church. While taking part in the monthly Mass, students become more aware of the Presence of God through prayer and scripture readings. In the classroom, they will make their own prayer books and Stations of the Cross.
English Language Arts
Text –Storytown. Harcourt, Inc., 2009.
The reading program is divided into six themes. Each theme has a variety of high-interest quality literature. Using the writing process, the students will write informational/explanatory texts, narratives, and opinion pieces. Learned vocabulary and grammar skills are reinforced through the reading selections. Students will also have opportunities to speak and listen in groups, one-on-one, and in whole class settings.
Math
Text –Go Math! Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2015.
Best math practices are utilized to help students continue to build a strong foundation in place value, addition, subtraction, and problem solving. The students will gain an in-depth understanding of multiplication and division as their facts are mastered. Students will construct viable arguments and respond to the mathematical thinking of others through written and oral communication. Measurement, time, geometry, and fractions will be explored and learned through hands on activities.
Science

Third grade students will learn about the scientific method and how it assists in understanding and interpreting our environment. Students will have opportunitities to think creatively and critically while problem solving. Through hands on experimentation students will gain knowledge of the Earth, Life and Physical Sciences.
Social Studies

Third grade students will develop the ability to make informed decisions as good citizens in a culturally diverse, democratic society. The ten thematic strands of social studies are woven throughout the curriculum. The third grade students will explore and learn about the many communities of our country and world. Significant holidays and the reason for their celebration will be studied. Students will be able to identify and explain the significance of political leaders and important historical people of the past. Students will explore local, state and national government and learn how each works. Important places and features of the world will be identified on a world map.
